I meant to take the camera to the fields today to capture
the beautiful light and magnificent colors of the fall greens.
But, the loading of our six pigs took longer than anticipated
due to pig stubbornness. I forgot about just how stubborn
pigs can be. After a lap (or two) (or three) around the pasture,

This had caused a lock on our ability to send emails, until they can determine if we are sending SPAM. As mentioned last week because our email list is large we can not simply send an email to everyone without using a service such… Read More »

It’s been an interesting experience. The weekly CSA box actually influenced most of our meal planning decisions. In the past I would say the choice of meat would influence most of our meal planning decisions on a daily basis. This year the produce we received influenced the decisions and I have to believe that we ate healthier as a result.… Read More »
December allows us to take some much needed vacation time. Traveling to visit family has been the biggest reward. And farmhouse reconstruction/remodeling continues for the 10th year as little by little we repair our cold, drafty 1860′s home. But, winter also gives us some wonderful time to play with our kids! We are excited to offer a unique way for members to get to know the farm and become part of where your food comes from. This year we built a beautiful platform tent. The intention was for it to be living quarters for either an apprentice or intern. We knew at the onset that there was a possibility that in… Read More »
The first week of CSA begins. Overall it’s been a muddy harvest this week While we’ve been needing the rain, now we need it dry so we can catch up on transplanting and seeding. We had 4 days of dry beautiful conditions, and tragically both tractors were down with mechanical issues. While very frustrating, we turned attention to much needed… Read More »

April’s warm temperatures really made our fall cover crop of rye grow quickly. This photo from yesterday shows the tall rye grass next to the shorter oats which were planted this spring. We utilize our beef animals to add fertilizer while contently grazing. Our portable fence system allows us to set up temporary paddocks, which are easily set up… Read More »

The greenhouse is just about ready for the first seeding of our 2010 crops! Celery root, leeks and onions are the first – followed by the slow-growing herbs of oregano and savory. Like Mat and I, our young children love spending time in the greenhouse: warm and bright even on a cloudy days, and the wonderful smells of soil and… Read More »
Winter – the snow (and ice) covered fields lay before me as I gaze out the window on this sunny day. The white so clean and refreshing; winter so restful and beautiful. Since the last CSA delivery, things have slowed down and given our family time to relax and play together. While washing and packing continue a few days a… Read More »
With the gush of summer crop harvests now over, we’re able to catch our breath and catch you up on farm news!
Amid the mountains of tomatoes, pyramids of zucchini’s, bins of sweet corn and green beans, the “Buy Local” theme we’ve all been hearing about brought a film crew to the farm in August. Public schools and institutions in… Read More »
It’s the time of the season when we work from early morning to late at night. We remind ourselves that we’ll sleep in December. Some days, we feel our most precious farm tool is the baby monitor, so we can keep packing tomatoes and broccoli, trimming onions, and counting cucumbers while the kids sleep.
But amid all the work in… Read More »
Sorry to have taken so long to give you an update on what is happening on the farm. We seem to have found our selves a little short on time these days for things such as web postings. Partially due to the preparation for the garlic harvest party- there is nothing like a party to get one motivated to clean… Read More »
Summary: In general the farm, fields and crops have never looked so good. We hired a crew of professional weeders to come as needed to keep the weeds at bay. It is expensive, but so far it looks like it will be a good investment. Not only are we drawing down the soil seed bank, but it makes harvest much… Read More »
Balance is a quest for which we continually strive. We hope this is evident in the produce we provide – but also in our daily lives. This last weekend was Art on the Square, which means for us there was no farmers market. We decided that after we did the Madison July beef delivery, that we’d make it a weekend… Read More »
Cool and dry.
This week is an incredible temperature shift from last week’s high-nineties! Crew members were decked out in pants and sweatshirts on Monday’s cloudy, breezy afternoon. While the temperatures have made it more seasonal to be harvesting peas, we’re all still recovering from last weeks long hot sticky hours! But the heat did take a tole on some… Read More »
While we’re loving the warmer temperatures after the rain last week (1.5″ + some), it sure is hot and steamy! Hot weather means that we are scrambling to harvest crops that are maturing quicker than we’d planned, and to get them harvested before they melt under the sun. Ugh! Our loyal harvest crew stuck out the hot, humid Monday harvest… Read More »
